The Components of a Hydroponic System

So you've decided to grow lettuce or tomatoes or maybe some watercress inside of your home. But before you get started, you need to come up with some sort of a blueprint for a hydroponic system. Right now, you might have in mind a bunch of bowls or trays filled with sponges, which is one of the more commonly-used and commonly-depicted systems.

But a hydroponic system doesn't have to be that simple—nor does it have to be that complex. A hydroponic system, in many cases, can consist simply of a pot filled with clay pebbles and coca bean shells and a water-based nutrient solution.

One important thing to consider when building your hydroponic system is the means through which the plants will obtain the water-based nutrient solution. One of the more prominent systems is the wick-based system. In the wick-based system, the plants imbibe the water through a wick, which extends down into the nutrient solution. In the sponge-based system we discussed earlier, a plant will rest on the top of a sponge, but its roots will extend down into a sponge that is moistened by a bowl of nutrient solution.

Another important consideration to make is the type of lights you will use in your system. If you go to a store such as Home Depot or Lowe's, you will find a large selection of fluorescent light bulbs, which can be used to grow plants hydroponically. Additionally, you may want to check on the back of your seed packages to see if any specific type of lighting is required for your plant of choice.

The last consideration you may want to make for your hydroponic system is somewhat more ethereal. You may want to consider whether or not you should attempt to control temperature and humidity in the room you have selected for your system. In some cases, this may be crucial, but with many plants it will not be.
